Story & Inspiration

A grieving wife walks into a king's court to avenge her husband's death and burns a kingdom to ashes

KANNAGI is a retelling of the final moments of The Silappathikaram, the Tamil epic of chastity, injustice and divine wrath written by Ilango Adigal. The retelling was imagined to make the viewers feel the weight of gold, the heat of the pyre, the silence before the anklet breaks.

When her husband, Kovalan, is wrongly executed for a theft he did not commit, Kannagi storms the court of the Pandya king Nedunchezhiyan to prove his innocence before the throne, then, in her grief and fury, casts down Madurai in flames.
